Gratiq Privacy Policy

Last updated 2026-10-07

1. Introduction

Smartbee LLC ("we", "our", or "us") makes Gratiq, a tip calculator and bill-splitting app. This policy explains what information Gratiq uses, why, and the choices you have.

Gratiq has no accounts. We never ask for your name, email address or phone number.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Camera and Photos

Gratiq asks for camera access so you can photograph a receipt, or photo library access if you prefer to pick an existing photo. Neither is used unless you choose to scan.

2.2 Receipt Images

To read a receipt, the image is sent securely to Google Gemini through our server. Our server only passes it along and doesn't keep a copy; Google processes the image under its own terms and privacy policy.

So you can look back at past receipts, the app keeps a copy of the photo on your device with your history. Deleting a history entry deletes its photo.

2.3 Tip History

Your history stays on your device and is not synced anywhere. You can delete it at any time.

2.4 Receipt Insights (optional)

When you first save a calculation, Gratiq asks whether you'd like to help improve the app by sharing receipt details. If you agree, the details of each saved calculation are sent to us — such as the restaurant's name, address and phone number; the items and amounts; the payment type (for example cash or card — never card numbers); party size or table number and any names printed on the receipt; the time of the visit; the tip and how the bill was split; and technical information about the scan.

We don't link this information to an account, device ID or advertising identifier, and receipt images are never included. We use it to make receipt reading more accurate and to understand tipping patterns, and keep it for as long as it's useful for those purposes.

2.5 Location (optional)

If you share receipt insights and allow location access, Gratiq adds the approximate location of where you saved the calculation, rounded to roughly 100 meters (about a city block) before it is sent. We use it to understand tipping by area. You can deny location access and Gratiq works just the same.

2.6 Analytics

We use Google Analytics to see how the app is used — which features are opened, whether scans succeed, and the amounts, tip percentage and split people calculate (never the restaurant or the receipt image). Google Analytics uses a pseudonymous identifier and may infer approximate location from your IP address. We never send it your name, email or receipt images.

2.7 Advertising

Gratiq is free because it shows ads from Google (AdMob in the app, AdSense on our website). iOS asks whether Gratiq may use your advertising identifier for personalized ads; if you allow it, AdMob may use it, and if you decline, Gratiq doesn't access it. Either way ads are still shown, and our ad partners may use ad interaction and general usage data to show and measure them. On our website, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info.

2.8 Error Reports

If a scan fails, a short technical error report is sent so we can fix the problem. It contains no receipt image.

3. Service Providers

We work with these providers to run Gratiq:

  • Google — receipt reading (Gemini), analytics (Google Analytics) and advertising (AdMob, AdSense)
  • Supabase — database hosting for receipt insights and error reports
  • Vercel — hosting of our website and app server
  • Cloudflare — support email delivery

Google's privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.

Our website doesn't respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals. Google may collect information about your activity over time and across different websites and apps, as described above.

4. What We Don't Collect

  • Your name, email address or phone number
  • Credit card or bank account numbers
  • Stored receipt images on our servers
  • Any account or ID created by Gratiq

5. Storage and Security

Your history and receipt photos stay on your device until you delete them. Data sent to our servers uses HTTPS. Because receipt insights aren't linked to an account or device ID, we can't tell which records are yours or delete them individually. Details such as the restaurant, time and approximate location could still point to a particular visit, so please don't share insights if that concerns you.

6. Your Choices

  • Receipt insights — say no when asked and no receipt insights are sent to us. To change your answer later, delete and reinstall the app (on the web, clear the site's data).
  • Permissions — camera, photos, location and tracking are all optional; you can change them in iOS Settings at any time.
  • Personalized ads — turn off Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking for Gratiq.
  • History — delete entries and their photos whenever you like.
  • Manual entry — type amounts in instead of scanning.

7. Children's Privacy

Gratiq is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we update this policy, we'll post the new version here and change the date at the top.
